The spinal cord injuries awareness day is scheduled for the 5th of September 2018. The theme for this year is " stop spinal cord injuries". As such, this awareness will be at Hoerskool Staatspresident C.R Swart.
Thabang, who is a current peer-supporter for spinal cord injured patients has been chosen to speak at this event to bring awareness on how learners can avoid getting spinal cord related injuries. He will also bring awareness regarding the existing peer-support programme that learners can tell their relatives and/or friends about.
Netcare Rehabilitation Hospital
- Front of hospital display of posters in line with theme on PREVENTION
- These posters have already gone up in all strategic areas of our hospital
- An email banner will run on the day
- On Wednesday we are running a workshop 11-1pm. We have invited nurses and unit managers from all Netcare Hospitals as well as from other hospital groups, funders and past and present patients and their families. Although the focus is STOP SPINAL CORD INJURY our speakers are also going to touch on aspects of the rehabilitation journey, adjustment to the injury, the return to work process, advice and motivation by sharing their own experiences. Our speaker line-up is great in that it covers experiences from a recently rehabbed person, a female and a person who has surpassed all barriers of his disability over a period of time
- Everyone will be wearing these stickers on the day
Life Rehabilitation based at Life Entabeni Hospital
The unit is planning to host an informative session about spinal cord injury and two guest speakers have been invited to share their testimonials. All attendees will be invited to attend a special tea afterwards.
The unit is planning to host a picnic for all patients who have suffered a spinal injury.
Theme of the planned event: STEP INTO MY WHEELS
The unit is hoping to partner with external stakeholders who are also passionate about employing persons with disabilities. The idea is to ask the public to spend a few minutes in a wheelchair (step into my wheels) and thereby creating awareness about how persons lives may change once they have suffered a spinal injury and subsequently became dependant on using a wheelchair.

The Physiotherapy Department have their own "Back Week" awareness program running from Monday 3rd September to Thursday and we expect an increase in visitors to the exhibition area.
The Public relations office have invited members of the media and will release a press statement containing updated facts and stats provided by the medical staff of the ICU and ASCI Unit. It was very well supported last year and we will have a register for visitors to sign this year.
