Activities of Prevention Committee, ISCoS

The Prevention Committee of ISCoS undertakes various activities for prevention of Spinal Cord Injuries  and creating awareness. Some of the activities of the committee have been as under:-

  • Global Mapping

Prevention Committee of ISCoS annually updates an epidemiological database including the causes, prevalence, incidence and survival of people with SCI. For use in injury prevention, this needs to be a Living Data Respository (LDR) with information to allow valid local and international comparisons to be made. This data is presented within the format of a Map of Global Epidemiological trends which aims to present information in an intuitive manner of analytical utility to clinicians, makers of policy and to assist in providing traction for advocates of prevention. The LDR project stratifies global data into quality zones and all information is being grouped and presented within the reference frame to assist interpretation. The resultant map of information quality shows insufficient data for incidence and prevalence in many major population regions. The foundation document outlining the research methodology of this project is available through the ISCoS journal Spinal Cord - http://www.nature.com/sc and the latest global TSCI data (2011) are available at the column on the right of this page.

  • Developing AVs for creating awareness on Prevention of Spinal Injuries

Realising the immense need for community awareness on Prevention of Spinal Cord Injuries, 08 and 10 minute AVs for general public and professionals as well as policy makers respectively have been developed.
In addition 40 second AVs have been developed on Prevention for use in media campaigns/ talks etc. The AVs are available on the ISCoS website.

  • Developing Radio jingles and other material on Prevention of SCI

Radio jingles on prevention of Road Traffic Accidents, Diving Accidents, Falls, Falling objects, Sports Injuries, and Violence Injuries have been developed. Other material like posters etc are being developed.

  • Translation of AVs

The process of translating into “Hindi”, the national language of India and Greek has already been completed. Interest has been shown for translation in Turkish, Japanese, Spanish and Romanian.

  • IDAPP: Pilot project to establish a data base for select Asian Spinal Cord Network members.

Recognizing the need for collecting data in order to plan appropriate prevention programs, a pilot project to establish a data base for select Asian Spinal Cord Network members is in process.

Web platform has been developed by Kirthi Technologies, a software company based in India. An online training program was also developed. All experts participating in the project underwent training as per the program.

The study is expected to finish enrolling patients by August end 2016. If the project is successful, more centres globally would be added.
