International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) has decided to observe 5th September as Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Day, with the intention of increasing awareness amongst general public. It is presumed that the awareness would facilitate an inclusive life for persons with disability and ensure success of prevention programs.
05th September, a neutral day without any significance as such, has been decided upon since the weather across the globe is likely to be conducive for outdoor activities and schools as well as colleges are generally open allowing the younger generation to be targeted.
On the ‘Spinal Cord Injury Day’, Spinal Cord Society (SCS) along with Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI), Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IAPMR), Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN), Asian Spinal Cord Network (ASCoN), Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) and The Spinal Foundation (TSF) would carry out the different activities in the following Cities:

The play is based on real life stories of patients highlighting aspects of SCI- cause, problems, difficulties of integrating with society. It has been put together by Red Curtain, the oldest English theatre group in Bengal.

Research Society of Orthopaedics PGIMS, Rohtak is going to contribute to the noble concept of International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) by celebrating “Spinal Cord Injury Day”, on 5th September, 2016 in the Department of Orthopaedics, Pt. B D Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak. We are organizing a public awareness program in our hospital in the form of poster and video presentation. Students and staff of our Orthopaedic Department and College of Physiotherapy are going to participate in this endeavour. This will be followed by guest lectures by eminent spine surgeons Prof. Rajbhadur & Prof. SS Sangwan .

Spinal Cord Society (SCS) serves as national coordinating, co-relating and advisory, non profit making body on the study of all the problems concerning the causation and prevention of traumatic and non traumatic lesion of the spine and spinal cord including basic and clinical research, medical and surgical treatment, clinical practice, education, rehabilitation and social reintegration, in close collaboration with other national and international bodies, encouraging maximum available use of resources within the country.
Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI)
The aim of ASSI is to promote scientific spine care, both surgical and non-surgical, in India through the medium of national, regional and local meetings, symposia, CMEs and workshops. The Motto was “if we are doing it, let us do it better”. ASSI promoted any spine related scientific activity, anywhere in India. ASSI also help formation of local spine bodies. In the last 25 years of existence, primary focus of ASSI has been “Patient's welfare first”! It puts the patient above anything else and practices science. It is an organization of scientists with humane minds.
Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA)
The IOA is one of the largest professional organizations which has more than 10000 active life members. It is a vibrant organization which focuses on academics, research and social networking. From the time of its formation in 1955, in these 60 years this organization has evolved into a strong professional body with many sub-committees and regional committees.
Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IAPMR)
IAPMR, Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, is a scientific body of the Medical Doctors (Physiatrists), working in the speciality of PMR, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. It is a registered society promoting education and research in PMR. It also looks into legislative affairs for persons with disability.
Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN)
IAN is a platform to facilitate exchange of information and enhance networking activities among neurologists. The long term mission is to familiarize all members of academy with the concepts, themes and good practices of advocacy for neurology so as to improve the status of neurology education and services all over the country. Neurology services are extended to far corner of the country through health camps and life-line train. Public awareness day for Stroke, Epilepsy and Multiple Sclerosis is organized regularly every year.Asian Spinal Cord Network (ASCoN)
Asian Spinal Cord Network (ASCoN) is an affiliated society of ISCOS (International Spinal Cord Society). It was initiated in 2001 following a meeting of regional experts during the International Conference on Spinal Cord Lesion Management hosted by the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), Bangladesh. ASCoN currently has 75 member organizations in 18 countries in Asia.
Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC)
ISIC is the most advanced Spine, Orthopedic and Neuromuscular Surgical centre in India with the latest state of the art diagnostics and surgical equipment and a highly qualified team of specialists recognized internationally who have been trained in leading institutes of India and abroad. ISIC strive to bring awareness in the field of disability and lobby with policy makers to introduce suitable legislation for prevention of disability and enforcement of the equal opportunity bill.
The Spinal Foundation (TSF)
The Spinal Foundation is an India Self-Help Group for persons with spinal cord injury. As an umbrella organisation, The Spinal Foundation seeks to combine efforts, be more effective, improve reach, have unified voice for advocacy, share best-practices and address the daunting challenges faced by persons with SCI, especially those who are also economically challenged, and living in rural areas. The Spinal Foundation aspires to improve quality of rehabilitation, guide persons with spinal cord injury to a healthy life of dignity and improve advocacy. Living Well with SCI is the motto of The Spinal Foundation.
